COUPLE BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO TUDOR MANSION—AND GETS GEORGIE RECOGNITION

Versa’s “Let There Be Light” Project Nominated As Best Residential Renovation and Best Kitchen

December 5, 2016 –

It is official: The nominees for the 2017 Georgie Awards have been published, and a Versa Homes project, called “Let There Be Light”, has been named a Finalist in the “Best Residential Renovation $500,000 – $799,999” category, as well as the “Best Kitchen Renovation under $125,000” category. These nominations demonstrate Versa’s exceptional commitment to quality, and the project earned well-deserved recognition as one of the very best out of hundreds of submissions this year.

Georgie Award submissions are adjudicated by a distinguished panel of highly qualified judges from outside of British Columbia, who are selected for their expertise in their field. Each submitted project must meet or exceed the category criteria, and is judged for technical achievement, as well as for how it improves the lives of the homeowners.

When JJ and Kimberly Israels purchased the 1920’s Tudor-style mansion, they knew immediately that a full home renovation would be needed. The dark and somber feel was a complete mismatch for the sunny disposition of the young family. The challenge for them, and for Versa Homes, was to maintain the classic, timeless appeal of the home while transforming it into a bright, warm, modern living space.

With three young children in the mix, this meant getting creative.

A huge basement added raw square footage to the home, but its unfinished state made the property feel emptier and darker. The design team reclaimed that space and created a "recreation centre" for all members of the family, including an indoor hockey rink, a gymnastics area, a cinema, an arts and crafts room, and multi-purpose entertainment area, all with an open concept.

One consistent theme throughout the design was the mix of old, textured materials and compatible newer, more modern counterparts. For example, classic Shaker-style cabinetry featured mirrored accents. Custom fabricated sliding barn doors saved space while adding a rustic feel. Crushed velvet upholstery was chosen for built-in furniture, and existing Brazilian Teak floor were painstakingly refinished with dark stain, to contrast with the bright, white interior paint throughout.

Today, the home feels bright and open in every room—something that was very important to the homeowners.

Versa Homes is proud to have delivered this delicate balance between modern family fun and traditional classical features. From beautiful designer touches, to energy efficient additions like programmable lighting and sound, to the custom millwork throughout, every aspect was meticulously planned and executed. The results have paid off—with the homeowners loving the great new look and feel of the home, and the renovation receiving its place as a Finalist for the much-coveted Georgie Awards.

RARE ARTWORK FINDS NEW HOME IN GEORGIE NOMINATED WINE CELLAR

Versa’s “Cave à Vin” Project Nominated As Best Any Room

January 5, 2017 –

Versa Homes has been named Finalist for 3 Georgie Awards this year. One of the projects, called “Cave à Vin”, is in the “Best Any Room” category, which is especially competitive because it’s open to both new builds, and renovation projects. The Versa team is proud and grateful for being hand-picked as a Georgie Award nominee, out of hundreds of submissions this year.

The “Cave à Vin” is an immaculate wine cellar, custom crafted to safely store 2,000 bottles, in a temperature-controlled environment with lush mahogany finishes.

One of the most interesting aspects of the “Cave à Vin”, is how it became a permanent home for a rare piece of artwork: “The Card Game” by John Sanderson-Wells. In over 35 years, owner Bernie Rokstad never found the “right place” for the Victorian-era oil painting.

The wine cellar features 3 alcoves, backed with lightly-coloured ledgestone, that were originally designed to visually break-up the dark mahogany millwork, add texture, and provide a “French underground” feel to the wine cellar.

When the project was complete, it became apparent that the precious canvas should be mounted in one of the alcoves. It lends an air of “old-world” authenticity that elevates the “Cave à Vin” as a unique and special space.

The Versa team would like to thank Mr. Rokstad for the opportunity to realize this one-of-a-kind vision, and the Georgie Awards judges for their recognition of all the hard work and craftsmanship poured into the project.
